Mexican Market

Like last week’s “illo” of a Chinese weaver, this week’s Mexican market is from another educational reader titled simply “The Gift”.  New vocabulary is paired up with a story that tells about another culture.  These stories are simple and sometimes even shallow – yet they introduce children to another place, to other children just like themselves, and it makes an impression on young minds.  I paint the place as vividly as I can, regardless of the story.

Everyday life is especially colorful in Mexico, and I enjoyed the rainbow hues of the marketplace, where grocers scoop from jars and wrap Abuela’s provisions in white paper.  My protagonist is the young granddaughter seen at right.  Her grandmother possesses near-magical powers as a cook, and the girl soon discovers she is part of that special lineage.  That is the gift – the richness of Abuela’s kitchen.

Order Mexican Market as a POSTER this week, and get a free greeting card (of the same image)!   $10 for the poster and card, shipping included.  Order your poster here.  Your can also order a six-pack of cards for $15.  Order greeting cards by filling in the title here.

A good week to all,
