Curve in the Road, Jerusalem

This might be one of the strangest landscapes – or cityscapes – I’ve ever painted.  It began with a photograph I took from the window of a cab four years ago.  What a crazy curve!  It wraps around an unexpected oasis of unmanicured earth in the middle of the city – a crazy quilt of colors overgrown with rosemary and wild plants, surrounded by the geometric shapes of West Jerusalem.  Equally unexpected is the curve of the building in the distance.  Dashed curbs color coded with parking restrictions add to the oddness of the scene.  In the upper right, buildings and church spires rise above the wall that surrounds the Old City.

This is one of my first oil paintings – done in water-based oils, which I just started using less than a year ago.  This painting was a great opportunity to practice rendering different subjects:  buildings and plants, angles and curves, stone and pavement, clouds and sky.  Oils are both more subtle and more bold than the gouache and acrylics I’ve been using all my life.  What a pleasure to work in a new medium!

The original painting of Curve in the Road is FOR SALE.  Please inquire if you are interested.  Order it as a POSTER this week, and get a free greeting card (of the same image)!   $10 for the poster and card, shipping included.  It will be blank on the inside, so you can use it for any purpose.  I hope you will send the card to someone you care about.  This is my way of spreading my art around – because people who read my posts and like my art are generally people who like receiving a hand-written note in the mail (and a colorful picture).

Order your poster here!

PRICE DROP:  Good news!  I’ve taken the plunge and bought my own printer.  As a result, I’m able to lower the cost of my posters.  8.5″x11″ posters are now just $10 (down from $12) – including shipping within the continental U.S.

Thanks for your interest in my art!  If you want to be removed from this mailing list, just let me know.  Otherwise, see you next week!
