Maternal Roots

Maternal Roots is an image of adoptive motherhood.  It was commissioned as a Biblical illustration about ten years ago.  My broad-minded client requested that God be depicted as a feminine being – a nurturing maternal caregiver.  Not  just children of different places and races come under her protective wing, but also the sick, the wounded, the melancholy, and the elderly.  In our fragile human condition, we are all embraced and  adopted as children.

This is a buddha-like mother hen, with wings folded in meditation.  Patience and peace are what I wished to convey.  Within her, a tree with broad roots signifies that hers is not a flighty embrace, but something rooted and timeless.

Maternal Roots is one among many mother-&-child images on sale in my webstore for Mother’s Day.
