Hudson River Clearwater Festival

Back in 2002, I was fortunate to receive this commission to design an illustration for the Clearwater Hudson River Revival music festival.  The Clearwater is a “sloop”, a sailing ship built in the 1960s as a historical replica of a Dutch vessel.  According to the Clearwater website, it is  “a replica vessel modeled after the Dutch vessels that sailed the Hudson River in the 18th and 19th centuries, was launched on May 17, 1969 from Harvey Gamage Shipyard in South Bristol, Maine . . . Sailing from town to town today, the Clearwater models her course after that of the historic Dutch sloops. Their cargoes and crews were the main communication link between riverfront towns and outlying areas which now house one-tenth of this nation’s population. Clearwater continues that tradition as a vital link between communities and carries a message to the people who sail on her and see her iconic broad sails from the shore about the beauty and wealth of our region’s waterways – and the everlasting need to protect, preserve and celebrate them.”

Clearwater is also the name of a music festival held each June at Croton Point Park in Croton-on-Hudson, New York.  I was hired to create two versions of this illustration – one in color, and one in black and white.  The color version was limited to two colors due to printing restrictions. Both were used to promote the festival that year.  Notice Pete Seeger is on the list of performers.

Next year’s festival is already scheduled for June 16-17th!  Perhaps I will offer use of these illustrations again.  Cleaning up the Hudson River couldn’t be more important.  If you like music festivals, consider attending to support this worthy cause.

A good week to all!
