Diversity

IMAGE OF THE WEEK

Diversity© Durga Yael Bernhard

This illustration was commissioned by the “Generation Challenge Programme”, described as “a time-bound 10-year initiative (2004–2013), with the mission of using genetic diversity and advanced crop science to improve crops for greater food security in the developing world”.  Their goal is to create a “future where plant breeders have the tools to breed crops in marginal environments with greater efficiency and accuracy for the benefit of the resource-poor farmers and their families”.  Sounds great!  Exactly what scientific techniques this program used, I do not know.

I was hired to create several illustrations for their publicity materials. GCP wanted not only plant diversity, but racial diversity as well, which is why they chose me as an illustrator.  They are active on several continents, and wanted lavishly colorful art to reflect their broad outreach.  They also wanted a style with child appeal, even though the art was used on materials meant not only for adults, but primarily for scientists.  They paid well, their deadlines were reasonable, and they were easy to work with.

The program ended, as expected, several years ago.

A good week to all!
